Brief Description/Abstract/Concept
This project visualizes global LGBTQ+ inclusivity by mapping the presence of LGBTQ+ choruses and exploring societal attitudes toward the community. Through an interactive world map built with P5.js, it highlights supportive policies, advocacy efforts, and challenges such as conversion therapy and social stigma. The map is designed to connect individuals with local LGBTQ+ musical communities, fostering a sense of belonging while raising awareness about global disparities in LGBTQ+ acceptance and resources.
Why This Topic (Motivation/Inspiration)
Having volunteered with the Beijing Queer Chorus and the Shanghai Hyperbolic Singers, I witnessed firsthand the empowering sense of community these non-profit LGBTQ+ choruses provide. These organizations play a critical role in creating safe spaces for queer individuals, especially in regions where LGBTQ+ voices are marginalized due to political and societal constraints.
China has at least eight non-profit LGBTQ+ choruses across various cities, yet many queer individuals are unaware of their existence. By mapping these communities, I hope to offer a valuable resource for LGBTQ+ individuals seeking support, connection, and a sense of identity through music. My personal experiences and the challenges faced by these groups have motivated me to develop a tool that bridges this information gap and fosters inclusivity worldwide.
Data Resources
For the current map I am just using subscriber data from Daniel’s YouTube video tutorial about data visualization. I am planning to collect the data manually, however I haven’t finish the collection yet. I have just found out this data source yesterday introduced by my friend at Beijing queer chorus.
